Annual Star-B-Que 2002

The day started of with a good meal at Bonanza.

This year we had fellow astronomers for the RASC - Saskatoon Centre join us.

Our afternoon tour was at Environment Canada's site south of Regina

At least one person can still smile in this kind of weather!

A pair of solar trackers.  The balls are used to occult the sun to measure indirect radiation from the sun.

The instruments are located on top of a tall platform.

An assorted variety of solar trackers which measure solar radiation at many different wavelengths.

Below the platform is the computer systems that collect and display the instrument data.

After a short walk down the road, we visited the instruments in the field.  The instrument on the left is a ceilometer which measures cloud height.  The fenced platform protects the rain collector from wind shear.

Stay away from the ceilometers!  The laser is dangerous!

Tour guide, Reesa, answered all our questions.  Thanks, Reesa!

This instrument opens the lid to collect rain water for chemical analysis.

The underground bunker has red and blue lights to indicate whether it's safe to enter.

We piled down the stairs but didn't have keys.

The 10 meter observation tower has many instruments on it at different heights.

The instrument on the right is used to measure radioactivity.

Heading back to the station.

Everyone should have one of these!

The huge helium balloon housed in the shed.

A great finale to a wonderful tour!

After missing the IMAX show, we met at the Kalium Observatory for a tour.

Inside the observatory.

Tyrone and Rick were especially interested in the project.

The barbecue was held under a rain shelter at a campground.

Sam is busy cutting up the buns.

It felt good to sit down in a chair and relax.

It was great to visit with the Saskatoon folks!

Faster Rick!  We're hungry!

Tyrone helping Steve with the second barbecue.

After supper on the way back to the IMAX, some geese were having supper, too.

The Saskatoon members watched Ocean Oasis at the Kramer IMAX Theatre.  Great show!

To wrap up the day, a few munchies were in order to listen to Vance give a presentation about his comet discovery.

This year's weather was the total opposite of last year's Star-B-Que.  Guess we'll have to try again next year!
