About Us
Our mandate is to stop the spread of Light Pollution in Saskatchewan through the promotion of Responsible Lighting practices.
changes nocturnal wildlife patterns and migration patterns
is linked to nighttime health disorders
causes unwanted glare, light clutter and light trespass
promotes graffiti and nighttime crime
causes air pollution through energy production that is ultimately wasted.
We do not promote turning lights off at night! Lights are necessary for safety. We follow the principles of the International Dark Sky Organization, a network of professional astronomers, amateur astronomers, naturalists and concerned citizens who are committed to stopping the loss of the night sky.
Our plan to eliminate light
pollution is simple. Turn lights
downward toward the ground. This
is accomplished by using shielded lighting fixtures and positioning lights as
NOT to allow light to escape upward or to the sides.
Sideways and upward light cannot produce any safety or security, and is
expensive wasted energy. Light
pollution shines in your windows at light, causes glare on roadways, and
destroys the skies for astronomy. All
forms of outdoor lighting for streetlights, parking lots, parks, businesses,
advertising, and security lights can be shielded. It just takes the will to
do so. It takes will to save energy,
reduce pollution, save wildlife, increase safety and improve our nighttime
environment.
